Around the Houses - Auction Preview

Coming up for sale at auction over the next few week are a fine selection of woodblock, woodcut and linocut prints. Many are appealing, some are well known, a few over-priced and some quite valuable.

Listed in no particular order, for you to enjoy and even try your luck bidding at a real auction!!

"The Intruder" dated '50 by
Hughes Blair-Stanton (1902-81)
Lot 106 - Keys Fine Art Auctioneers 16th May 2014 - LINK

"Sweat Peas"
John Hall-Thorpe
Lot 360 - Rosebery's 10th May 2014 - LINK
I know !! but they are still popular and this version looks to have good colour. Unlike many -  as this picture is usually seen with chronic and irreversible fading. Estimated at £150-200, a few amount if there are no hidden problems.

Swans in Flight - A W Seaby (1867-1953)
Lot 367 - Rosebery's 10th May 2014 - LINK
I like these and they seem to be making very good money at auction, so the estimate of £100-150 might be on the low side; although it looks a bit stained, so get a firm condition report.

"The Argosy" - artist C. A. Wilkinson
Woodcut or linocut ?
Lot 903 - Stacey's Auctioneers 10th May - LINK

Robert Gibbings (1889-1958)
Lots 187 & 188 -  Holloways Auctioneers 13th May - LINK
Woodcuts - 187 is signed and 188 unsigned and only attributed.
Estimated at £120-180 and £100-150 - seems quite light !
I have seen small woodcut forsales priced in the high £100s.

.... and on a woodcut theme .... a classic
