Lucian Cariat - Medals

Lucian Jean Henri Cariat (1874-1925) is not one of the top names of medal design - however, he created many beautiful design during his career, many of which continued to be issued even after his death. All the more reason to highlight the story behind the man; if I can find any !. Quite often his subjects were after the classical - like the medal below, which is understood to be Atalanta and Hippomenes.

The works I have seen have mainly been signed "L Cariat", so are easy to attribute correctly - no confusing monograms or spurious marks.

But who is he ? --- I don't know ! there is very little information about this artist. His dates are widely quoted but little else. There is one short reference about being a pupil of Francois Joseph Hubert Ponscarne (1827-1903) and that he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Francais in 1898, winning a "Houour Award".

His lasting legacy are his medals  - a few are shown here.
